"Fun But Unusable Mental Images dep't"
|
-- image #1 The other night I was watching Taken, which is the Exile all-badass revenge story of action movies - seriously, Liam Neeson's character could be either Gryphon or Zoner in full sleeper-agent hideout mode, circa 2340 - and I couldn't help but envision how screwed those Albanians would've been if the two (evidently-)American tourists their spotter had tagged at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport had been, say, Kate and Juri circa City of Light: "Dad, we're going to have to finish this later," Kate said, peering thoughtfully across the courtyard into the living room window. "Some guys just broke into the place and Juri is killing them to death." --image #2 "Anakin," said Saionji dryly, "this reminds me of the time you decided you were going to marry the queen of Naboo. Do you remember that?" Anakin finished cutting open the elevator doors, scowled, and grumbled, "That would've worked if you hadn't stopped me, Master," before jumping into the shaft and disappearing. --G. -><- Benjamin D. "Dad, we're going to have to finish this later," Kate said, peering thoughtfully across the courtyard into the living room window. "Some guys just broke into the place and Juri is killing them to death." This seems like a really bad idea, considering the company those two keep. Anyone attempting to kidnap either of those ladies wouldn't be found in any condition to accost anything. The visual had me laughing for ten minutes... The bit with Anakin and Saionji...makes me want to read more of what exactly is going on with those guys, even if the second fragment wouldn't ever come to anything. And while the audiobook project is great, I'd rather there were new stories. Feels like there are a few outstanding (both excellent and unresolved) plots that I'm certain a lot of us fans would eagerly read, re-read, comment on, re-re-read, and thank you for. Of course, I like pretty much everything EPU has put out. I know as a fan, I should not bitch, and believe me, I am not. Just my opinion, and worth less than you paid for it. - Bodhi |

Speaking of Anakin, I've gotten a lot of mileage out of this particular Fear & Loathing riff over the years, both on the board and in studio bull sessions, but now I think I've found an actual use for it:
"Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a renegade Kanekan warlord," Anakin mused to Leyna as they ran as fast as they could through the many-columned gallery of the Central Hall. "Your normal Duelist will panic and immediately go on the offensive." He shook his head. "This is wrong. It arouses contempt in the loser-heart. Make the bastard chase you." He glanced back over his shoulder, saw Shuten still in hot pursuit, and smirked. "He will follow."

*makes peculiar snorting noise before cracking up completely* I would imagine Juri'd act similarly if she walked in on them... --- "Yeah, I'm definitely going to hell/But I'll have all the best stories to tell" -- Frank Turner, The Ballad of Me and My Friends "Actually," said Juri from on top of Kaitlyn, "this is rather fun..." |

LAST EDITED ON Jun-10-11 AT 01:15 PM (EDT) >Just have seen "Taken" earlier in the week, I'm thinking that Gryphon >showing up in Paris looking for Kate after being kidnaped by slavers >would involve a lot of dead bad guys, high proprty damage, and a >really REALLY POed EarthGov.... Heck, he doesn't even particularly like Paris, so minimizing the havoc wouldn't really be on his to-do list. OTOH, he totally would not have shot that French cop's wife. There are some things that simply aren't done. (Though I have to admit that in the event, it was an excellent way of illustrating that Liam Neeson was Serious For Reals.) >Of course, Kate would be on every slaver's "No way in hell!" list on >her own merits Well, yeah, that's kind of the point. If those guys had burst into Kate's apartment, she wouldn't have hidden under the bed and phoned her father, she'd have killed them to death. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. I don't see him doing the electric torture scene, either... though maybe Geoff Depew the character would if Big Fire was involved. "You know, we used to outsource this kind of thing. But what we found was the countries we outsourced to had unreliable power grids. Very Third World. You'd turn on a switch - power wouldn't come on, and then tempers would get short. People would resort to pulling fingernails. Acid drips on bare skin. The whole exercise would become counterproductive. But here, the power's stable. Here, there's a nice even flow. Here, you can flip a switch and the power stays on all day. Where is she?" |

If those guys had burst into >Kate's apartment, she wouldn't have hidden under the bed and phoned >her father, she'd have killed them to death. :) >Indeed. It would rapidly go from "Taken" to something approaching "Ransom of Red Chief" (with Toshiro Mifune or "Beat" Takeshi in the role of Red Chief). Either that or you'd have a group of kidnappers who, by sheer chance, succeed, realize who they've grabbed, and spend the rest of the story trying to figure out how to get rid of Kaitlyn and Juri without being cut into small pieces. "Let them go? Let them GO?! ARE YOU INSANE?! This is Kaitlyn Hutchins you're talking about! If we let them go, she will track us down and filet us into cutlets to use as the Secret Ingredient on the next episode of 'Iron Chef'!!" Ebony the Black Dragon "Life is like an anole. *Snort* I'd read this. There's something delightfully Terry Pratchett-esque about a dark room full of wild-eyed kidnappers speaking in hushed, frantic tones, terrified of their kidnap-ees overhearing them from the next room. ---- Now Playing: Eisenfunk -- Hymn (8-bit, 2010) ... < THIS SPACE FOR RENT > |

*sniggers uncontrollably* "Look, Baz, what else can we do? They have to stay here..." "But what if they're plotting their escape? You saw what Kaitlyn did to Fat Eric!" LAST EDITED ON Nov-20-12 AT 08:31 PM (EST) --image #3KAHM TALANN It's perfectly obvious where the datatracks are. He's given them to his droid. MASTER GAJIC (shocked) Threepio?! You didn't drag poor Threepio into this, did you? He's not up to the challenge. SENATOR PALPATINE (smugly) He stands out like a sore thumb. We'll find him. ANAKIN (angrily) The hell you will. He's got a two-day head start on you, which is more than he needs. C-3PO's got friends in every spaceport and settlement from here to Fedora Core. He speaks six million languages, knows every local custom, he'll blend in, disappear, you'll never find him. (He smirks.) With any luck he's got the Cup already. EXT. Many people on Fedora Core do, though contrary to popular belief, it's not actually a law. However, you might want to update your star chart; it's in the Debian sector. -- image #4 (this one is Truss's fault)Suddenly the door of Yoda's inner office opened again, instantly silencing the hubbub. All the other Jedi Councilors turned to look as the ancient master and Jason Lock emerged - both still downcast, disheveled, and feathery - and stood regarding them for a few moments. "As the Force my witness is," said Yoda solemnly, "thought turkeys could fly I did." Then, without another word, he turned and shuffled back into his office with Lock following behind. --G. -><- Benjamin D. -- image #5 INT. A CAVE KYOUICHI SAIONJI lies sprawled amid boulders and rubble. ANAKIN SKYWALKER leans over him, trying unsuccessfully to open the buckle of a web harness on SAIONJI's chest, then stops when SAIONJI opens his eyes and sits up, blinking blearily around. SAIONJI (bemused) Anakin... were you trying to undo this? [Taps buckle.] ANAKIN (defensive) Well, naturally. SAIONJI nods thoughtfully and looks around at the rubble-strewn cavern. SAIONJI Did you make the rocks fall, Ani? ANAKIN Er... suppose I must've, Master. SAIONJI Mm. SAIONJI suddenly bursts out laughing, a full-on hysterical crack-up, head thrown back, tears of mirth leaking from his eyes. SAIONJI (at the top of his voice) ANAKIN SKYWALKER IS AN IMBECILE!! In a sudden fit of rage, RITSU jumps to her feet, wrenches one of her cymbals off its stand, and wings it into the box seats, where it smashes a beverage cart and narrowly misses a couple of corporate bigwigs.
