"Technical Difficulties - Retaliation"

LAST EDITED ON Jan-15-15 AT 03:24 PM (EST)

What a marvelous surprise to see this piece this morning. Loved to see more of B'Elanna coming into her own, as well as punting Kraal off to a fiery death.

Also, rigging a Bird of Prey for remote control by an omnitool? That's a damn mean wrench she's learned to swing.

Typing from phone, so may come back with more later, but good times! The legacy oh house tenjoH grows :)

   Very nice!

Is it parallel invention, or am I hearing echoes of Bujold's Borders of Infinity in the prisoners' organized food call?

All I'm going to say for now is that will be discussed in the annotations, when they are released. ;)

Neat tie-in of the Klingon gene-augment situation.

Anyone else read "Visit To A Weird Planet, Revisited"? It's a sequel to the original fanfic VTAWP in which Kirk, Spock and McCoy materialise in the Transporter Room set of a 20th century TV studio. The sequel shows what happened to Bill Shatner and friends on the actual USS Enterprise. At one point there's a discussion of just how well Fred Phillips, the studio's makeup supervisor, created the "TOS style" Klingon look.

Oh, good. I didn't hallucinate that story.

Both of them are varyingly difficult to find. The original "Visit To A Weird Planet" was, I think, only published in fanzines; "Revisited" was also printed in the first "Star Trek: The New Voyages" story collection (which I have).

Ah, yes, my first exposure to fanfic, circa 1977. Come to think of it, I still have it in my collection somewhere, too. And that particular story stuck with me through all the decades since. (As I recall, I was also rather fond of the story called something like "The Enchanted Pool", too... To the best of my recollection, it could have slotted into UF quite nicely.)

As was mentioned, the Omnitool rig really wasn't able to DO much. Cloak, in-system navigation (sorta - they parked the ship almost on top of where she decloaked it), and some very rough handling of the weapons. If she'd tried to perform true ship to ship combat without having the noDwI's computers to help with the heavy lifting, it probably wouldn't have gone well at all.

It also helps that the Predator class was already designed for a single person to operate them in a true emergency, and a lot of that capability was preserved in the various Klingon knockoffs. :)

Well, ok, yes, that's all true. But it's still a pretty badass upgrade on the combat drone that an engineer is -normally- able to call to the table. I don't ever seem to recall being able to remote-rig the Normandy to show up and intimidate the opposition, is all I'm sayin' :)

I just noticed the designation of the captured ship. Nice to see 3com make an appearance by proxy :) Now off to actually read it...

I find that all I want to read about is B'Elanna. It's the best story I've read lately.

Yes- I like the others, but these just drag me in.

Wonderful.
