Your timing is spectacular. Just got off work, set up at the computer, and -BAM-! New thing to read! That was, as all of the TFLF have been so far, an absolute delight. The silly kid's cartoon show about the Project Phoenix Flight mission was a fantastic start, and it just kept rolling right along. Also, I just have to say... ...Jun is wonderful. -Droken "If at first you don't succeed, bull- riding is not for you." |

>I love the complete and utter destruction of whatever freaking trope >it is that any character caught like this MUST keep their secret power >hidden from their crew. Not that it would've changed anything significantly, but I was wondering if Shimakaze was planning to either just carry Jun to safety, or expecting to absorb the hit via the innate toughness of her Mental Model, neither of which would have been quite as shocking as her barrier field popping up. Either way, it was "save first, damn the questions later", which is always nice to see. "This is probably a stupid question, but . . ." |

Well, there's enough of a charge time on her frame shift, even for such extremely short-range jumps, that she knew she wasn't going to be able to get to Ui and then get both of them clear before the truck hit them. Similarly, tanking the impact directly wasn't going to help—she wouldn't have been harmed, but she didn't have a good way to brace for it, so all it would have changed was that the object that plowed fatally into Ui would have been her instead of the truck. Not ideal! Throwing the Klein field was the obvious solution to both problems. (They were also too far from shore to leave it to Rensouhou-chan. I mean the truck was in range, but the flight time on the shells would have been too long to help. Also, although she has no specific orders about avoiding disclosure, bombardments are so ostentatious. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. Whee! Another fun yarn. I admit, I was wondering how exactly they'd learn about their new friend. It was only a matter of time before they got at least a small introduction into the wider world Corwin alluded to in his mis-sent letter to Mio. >Well, there's enough of a charge time on her frame shift, even for >such extremely short-range jumps, that she knew she wasn't going to be >able to get to Ui and then get both of them clear before the truck hit >them. I'm trying to remember if Frame Shift is even in Arpeggio; I admit it's been a long time. > >(They were also too far from shore to leave it to Rensouhou-chan. Also, although she has no specific >orders about avoiding disclosure, bombardments are so >ostentatious. :) Yeah, pretty sure that would exceed the Admiral's orders. I mean, he's a laid back kinda superior officer, but shelling the city might stretch that a wee bit. =) Also, had to Google Rensouhou-chan, but hey, that's what it's for. ------ Fearless creatures, we all learn to fight the Reaper Can't defeat Her, so instead I'll have to be Her |

LAST EDITED ON Dec-05-17 AT 08:57 PM (EST) >I did -not- know they could use Frame Shift on short notice like that, >or with Mental Models at all. Most of them can't. Well, most of the capital ships can do it, but very few Mental Model by themselves, and no other destroyers that I know of. >I'm trying to remember if Frame Shift is >even in Arpeggio; I admit it's been a long time. It isn't called that (I borrowed the term from Elite Dangerous for Cantata, for no better reasons than I like it and it's not what FTL is called elsewhere in UF, which makes it distinctive), but at least a few of the larger ships in Arpeggio can teleport, yes. >Also, had to Google Rensouhou-chan, but hey, that's what it's for. The others were too distracted by the circumstances to notice it (tr.: I couldn't think of a way to mention it that wasn't too clunky), but the turrets on Shimakaze's ship body actually have the face on them, similar to the option on this model kit. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. >I'm entertained by the idea that Rensouhou-chan has become such a >fixture that the Duckies' >rigging is designed with carrying racks for the little guys. The Duckies' turrets have an even funnier name. The real Akizuki class had long 100mm guns designed as dual-purpose surface attack and antiaircraft weapons, as opposed to Shimakaze's 127mm guns. Thus, while Shimakaze's turret buddies are called Rensōhō-chan, literally "twin gun turret -chan", the Duckies' are called Chō-jūsenchi-hō-chan ("long ten centimeter gun -chan"). The reason I think that's funnier is because the Japanese themselves generally romanize it "Chou-10cm-hou-chan", and, well. I dunno, in English it's just funny. :) (I think this may have come up around here before, but meta-wise, Shimakaze, her semi-sister Amatsukaze, and the Duckies all have Turret Buddies instead of carrying their guns around like luggage, as most of the other destroyers do, or as inanimate parts of their rigging, because they're drawn by the same artist.) --G. -><- Benjamin D. Great to see another Federation yarn — the junior team are showing signs of being just as good as the seniors. Also, those last two lines had me laughing for a good few minutes. ;) -- Unable to save the day: File is read-only. |
