It would%27ve led to a major sidetrack%2C which is fine if you%27re padding an RPG but not so much when you%27re trying to hold together a narrative that%2C as %5Bi%5DSymphony No. 4%5B%2Fi%5D%27s often did%2C already showed a tendency to wander a bit.%0D%0A%0D%0AIt could have stood to be fleshed into an entr%27acte%2C but that would have caused other narrative problems%2C chief among them the fact that he appears in %22Bagatelle No. 3 in F Minor%22 - making a separate story showing something that happened to him between Bagatelles No. 1 and No. 3 a bit awkward%2C to say the least. So%2C it ended up getting left out altogether.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bhr%5D%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bfont color%3D%22black%22%5D%5Bpre%5D%5Btt%5D%5Bbig%5D%09Corwin Ravenhair was a young man in a thoroughly foul mood as%0D%0Ahe trudged through Jezebel%27s orbital spaceport station%2C pack on his%0D%0Aback. Theoretically%2C he was looking for passage to New Avalon from%0D%0Aone of the charter pilots who were refueling and getting ready to head%0D%0Aback out after dropping off well-heeled resort patrons%2C but it had to%0D%0Abe admitted that he wasn%27t looking very hard. In order for him to%0D%0Aactually notice a spacer willing to take him where he needed to go%2C he%0D%0Awould basically have had to walk right into her.%0D%0A%09This he proceeded to do%2C colliding heavily with a person%0D%0Awearing an EVA softsuit who was just emerging from one of the side%0D%0Aairlock corridors. Corwin let out a sharp grunt as part of the EVA%0D%0Asuit%27s backpack dug painfully into a tender spot%3B the wearer of the%0D%0Asuit made a soft%2C startled noise and took a couple of skipping steps%0D%0Aforward before turning. Neither fell.%0D%0A%09They regarded each other for a second%2C both taking stock of%0D%0Atheir persons to make sure nothing had been dropped or exchanged%2C and%0D%0Athen Corwin apologized.%0D%0A%09His victim was quite obviously a woman%2C petite and well-shaped%0D%0Ain one of those snug-fitting softsuits that were all the rage these%0D%0Adays for light extra-vehicular duty - the kind made of several layers%0D%0Aof the super-resilient polymer developed for Mobile Trace datafilms%2C%0D%0Awith a compact life-support backpack%2C various standard fittings%2C and a%0D%0Avisored hood added for atmospheric integrity. This particular one was%0D%0Awhite%2C with black inserts on the insides of the arms%2C a few dashes of%0D%0Asafety orange%2C and a couple of green metallic bits along the upper%0D%0Acurve of the ribcage whose function Corwin could not immediately%0D%0Adiscern.%0D%0A%09Softsuits%2C originally developed for the use of Destroid%0D%0Apilots%2C permitted much greater agility and dexterity than conventional%0D%0Ahard spacesuits%2C which was handy for making repairs to spacecraft and%0D%0Awhatnot. Corwin wouldn%27t want to get hit by a micrometeorite or an%0D%0A10%2C000-mile-an-hour paint fleck while wearing one%2C but then%2C that kind%0D%0Aof thing was no fun in a hardshell suit either.%0D%0A%09The woman tilted her head thoughtfully as she regarded him%0D%0Athrough the visor of her hood. The hood was a full-head affair - it%0D%0Ahad to be%2C for obvious reasons - which rather resembled a white%0D%0Aplastic balaclava fitted with a tinted ski visor and a breather mask.%0D%0ABehind the visor%2C all Corwin could see was a pair of wide eyes%2C their%0D%0Acolor indeterminate through the smoked plastic.%0D%0A%09After a moment%27s thoughtful silence%2C she reached up to her%0D%0Athroat and tabbed the control which released the breathing mask%2C%0D%0Acausing the hood to release its snug memory-material grip on her head.%0D%0AThen she unsealed the visor and slid it up onto her forehead%2C in the%0D%0Aprocess peeling off the whole headpiece%2C visor%2C mask%2C and all%2C leaving%0D%0Athe lot to hang down behind her neck like a sweatshirt hood.%0D%0A%09To Corwin%27s surprise%2C she wasn%27t so much a woman as a girl%2C%0D%0Aprobably in her mid-teens by his eyeball estimate%2C with a slightly%0D%0Ashaggy pageboy bob of blue-silver hair%2C very pale skin%2C and delicate%0D%0Afacial features dominated by a pair of wide%2C blood-red eyes.%0D%0A%09The eyes regarded Corwin calmly from under surprisingly%2C%0D%0Acontrastingly dark lashes as he stared at her%2C trying to figure out%0D%0Awhy she looked so familiar%3B then her lips quirked in a little smile.%0D%0A%09%22Hello%2C Corwin%2C%22 she said in a soft voice.%0D%0A%09Corwin blinked and stared at her for a three-count more%2C and%0D%0Athen he found his voice.%0D%0A%09%22Rei%3F%22 he murmured.%0D%0A%09Her smile widened just a tiny bit more%2C but she said nothing.%0D%0A%09Sheer delight replaced the incredulity on Corwin%27s face%2C%0D%0Abreaking away the mask of dour glumness that had settled on it like%0D%0Aconcrete since he%27d said his goodbyes on Jezebel and the Valiant.%0D%0A%09%22REI%21%22 he cried%2C then threw his arms around her. She made a%0D%0Avery soft surprised sound %28the kind which would be rendered in a comic%0D%0Abook by a large speech balloon containing only a tiny exclamation%0D%0Apoint%29 as Corwin%2C who overtopped her by more than a foot and probably%0D%0Adoubled her weight%2C bear-hugged her.%0D%0A%0D%0A%09Half an hour later%2C Corwin sat in the combination bar%2Fcafe on%0D%0Athe station%27s concourse%2C waiting. Though the planetside resort was%0D%0Aopulent by any standard%2C the orbital station was rather short on%0D%0Afrills. It was really just the outer-space equivalent of a truck%0D%0Astop.%0D%0A%09The resort didn%27t even operate the station. It was provided%0D%0Aby the division of GENOM Corporation which owned and operated the%0D%0Asystem%27s metaspace jumpgate. Resort patrons never boarded the station%0D%0Aitself%3B it was there to serve Jezebel%27s charter pilots.%0D%0A%09Because the station was operated by GENOM%2C Corwin supposed it%0D%0Awas more or less inevitable that the cafe on board would be a Chet%27s%0D%0AChow location. He didn%27t care for Chet%27s as much as some of his%0D%0Afriends did%2C but it didn%27t offend him either. He sat now at a corner%0D%0Atable%2C bemusedly taking in the decor. This particular Chet%27s was set%0D%0Aup with a sort of %22simulated Star Destroyer docking bay%22 theme going%0D%0Aon%2C complete with a TIE fighter suspended from the wall like a%0D%0Agigantic metal fishing trophy.%0D%0A%09Corwin%27s table was under this odd exhibit%2C so if he tilted his%0D%0Ahead back%2C he had a commanding view of the underbelly. This%0D%0Adistracted him momentarily%2C since it appeared%2C on closer inspection%2C%0D%0Ato be an actual starfighter%3B he had expected it to be a plastic%0D%0Adecoration.%0D%0A%09Well%2C he mused%2C I suppose it stands to reason. It%27s not like%0D%0Ait would have -cost- them anything.%0D%0A%09He pulled himself away from that train of thought and tried to%0D%0Athink of something constructive instead.%0D%0A%09Rei.%0D%0A%09Corwin hadn%27t seen Rei Ayanami since he was six years old%2C and%0D%0Anow he was trying to remember what he knew about her. On the whole%2C%0D%0Ait didn%27t amount to much. She was one of the people his father had%0D%0Abrought home from an Experts of Justice mission%2C in the early days of%0D%0Athe International Police%2C before the organization got so big that the%0D%0AChief was too busy to go into the field more than very rarely.%0D%0A%09That kind of thing had happened a few times - Gryphon and the%0D%0Aother early Experts would break up some kind of operation%2C usually one%0D%0Aof Big Fire%27s plots%2C and there%27d be somebody staying at their house or%0D%0AMegaZone%27s%2C or across the street at the Roses%27%2C for a period of time%0D%0Aranging from a few days to a few years.%0D%0A%09In Rei%27s case%2C it was years. She%27d lived with the Roses%2C but%0D%0Ahad spent a lot of time at Corwin%27s father%27s house%2C because she%27d%0D%0Abecome a student of the Asagiri Katsujinkenryuu%2C the family sword%0D%0Astyle. Corwin remembered her as a nice but quiet girl%2C often rather%0D%0Asad - shy and at the same time oddly unselfconscious.%0D%0A%09Other than that%2C he couldn%27t say he really knew her. He had%0D%0Ano idea where she came from or how she came to be involved in whatever%0D%0Acase of Gryphon%27s she%27d been involved in. All the same%2C he%27d been%0D%0Arather fond of her%2C and sad when she packed her bags one day and%0D%0Adisappeared from their lives. She wrote to Marty Rose or his father%0D%0Asometimes%2C but apart from that%2C she might have disappeared from the%0D%0Auniverse. Given that that was more or less what he was about to do%2C%0D%0Ahe found her sudden rematerialization oddly encouraging.%0D%0A%09He noted motion and looked up from his reverie to see her%0D%0Acoming into the restaurant. He blinked%2C then smiled slowly and took%0D%0Aher in as she scanned the restaurant and started toward his table. %0D%0A%09In his admittedly-fuzzy memories of her from the old days%2C Rei%0D%0Awas always dressed in workout clothes from a session in the dojo%2C%0D%0Asometimes traditional kendo garb%2C sometimes not. She had owned other%0D%0Aclothes%2C but they had been so anonymous that they%27d made no lasting%0D%0Aimpression on the young Corwin%27s memory.%0D%0A%09Her dress now was nothing in particular to write home about%0D%0Aeither%2C but it was so different from his mental image of her that%0D%0ACorwin had to smile. She was wearing black military-surplus trousers%2C%0D%0Athe slightly baggy kind with a lot of pockets%2C a grey ribbed tank top%0D%0Athat fit her trim figure snugly%2C a short black jacket with the sleeves%0D%0Arolled up%2C and the smallest pair of Doc Martens Corwin had ever seen.%0D%0AThere was a freelance spacer%27s utility belt settled on her slender%0D%0Ahips. Corwin%27s quick once-over identified an old-fashioned Cybergenix%0D%0Acommunicator%2C a grapple pack%2C a multitool%2C a couple of the most%0D%0Acommonly needed sizes of turbospanners%2C and a blaster pistol made from%0D%0Aa sawed-off Bryar C-16 carbine.%0D%0A%09The full effect should have been a bit butch%2C but she was so%0D%0Asmall and delicate-looking that it was instead oddly charming.%0D%0AIndeed%2C Corwin found that very odd. He%27d failed to recognize her%0D%0Apartly because of the age of his memories of her%2C and partly because%0D%0Ahe had unconsciously discarded the match he%27d received the first time%0D%0Aon the grounds that Rei couldn%27t possibly look the way he remembered%0D%0Aher now. She was several years older than he was%2C and so would be in%0D%0Aher mid-twenties today.%0D%0A%09Instead%2C she looked%2C except for her clothes%2C just as he%0D%0Aremembered her - small and slim%2C fine-boned%2C with modest but%0D%0Aharmonious proportions. %28Corwin suddenly recalled%2C with a slight%0D%0Areddening of his cheeks%2C that Rei was the first female he%27d ever seen%0D%0Anaked.%29 She dressed and carried herself like a grown woman now%2C but%0D%0Aput her in a school uniform and she could easily have passed for a%0D%0Aclassmate of Corwin%27s younger half-sister Priss Morgan%2C or possibly%0D%0Aeven a grade or two below her.%0D%0A%09She smiled very slightly as she slipped into the seat across%0D%0Afrom him. A complete stranger to her would probably have missed it%2C%0D%0Aand Corwin%27s familiarity with her was rusty enough that he only just%0D%0Anoticed it himself. He wondered what had prompted it%2C then realized%0D%0Ahis face was still a bit warm.%0D%0A%09%22I%27ve changed a little%2C haven%27t I%3F%22 she asked%2C and her voice%0D%0Awas just the same - soft%2C pitched low%2C but not so low that he had%0D%0Adifficulty hearing her.%0D%0A%09%22Just a little%2C%22 he replied. %22But not as much as I would have%0D%0Athought... %22%0D%0A%09She nodded. %22I have Edgerton%27s Syndrome%2C%22 she said matter-of-%0D%0Afactly.%0D%0A%09Corwin cocked his head%2C interested. %22So you%27re a Detian.%22%0D%0A%09%22Apparently so.%22%0D%0A%09%22Acquired or inherited%3F%22 Corwin wondered.%0D%0A%09%22I wish I knew%2C%22 Rei replied%2C but before they could get into%0D%0Athat or anything else%2C a waitress appeared with menus.%0D%0A%09%22So%2C%22 said Rei once the waitress had taken their orders and%0D%0Adeparted. %22Why are you here%2C and not with the Valiant%3F%22%0D%0A%09Corwin thought about it for a second%2C then shrugged and just%0D%0Atold her%2C half out of perversity toward Frey%27s precious security%0D%0Alevel%2C half out of plain curiosity about how she would react.%0D%0A%09Rei%27s reaction was slightly disappointing. She just nodded%0D%0Aand said%2C %22So you need transportation to New Avalon.%22%0D%0A%09Corwin nodded. %22And without regular service out here yet%2C%0D%0AI%27ll have to charter a flight%2C at least as far as Babylon 6%2C if I can%0D%0Afind somebody going my way.%22 He took a drink from his glass of water.%0D%0A%22So what are -you- doing here%3F%22%0D%0A%09Rei smiled slightly.%0D%0A%09%22Going your way%2C%22 she said.%5B%2Fbig%5D%5B%2Ftt%5D%5B%2Fpre%5D%5B%2Ffont%5D%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bhr%5D%0D%0A%0D%0AFrom there%2C had this thread been followed further%2C we%27d have been introduced to Rei%27s ship%2C the %5Bi%5DCipher Zero%5B%2Fi%5D %28an ExoSal Model CX-93 %5Bi%5DAvenger%5B%2Fi%5D-class freighter%29%2C and HK-47. There would%27ve been a sequence for the %5Bi%5DKnights of the Old Republic%5B%2Fi%5D fans in which Corwin used his Repair skill to give HK a couple points of DEX back%2C following which the ship would%27ve been waylaid by an Earthforce patrol ship and boarded. %28%22Delighted statement%3A Boarder repulsion protocol activated%21%22%29 After fighting off the boarded and making their escape%2C our heroes would obviously have made it to New Avalon%2C parting with promises not to let more than 10 years go by between contacts again. 1|1|0|||1||RE%3A OUTTAKE%3A S4%3A Five Bagatelles|Offsides||07:49:09|11/05/2006|I can see why making it into a separate piece might be problematic%2C but I%27d love to see the boarding scene - perhaps that can be worked into some sort of flashback - possibly even narrated from HK%27s POV%3F%5C%0D%0A%0D%0AOffsides%0D%0A%0D%0A%26%2391%3B...%26%2393%3B in order to be a realist you must believe in miracles.%0D%0A -- David Ben Gurion%0D%0AEPU RCW %23%26pi%3B%0D%0A%23include %3Cstdsig.h%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A 3|2|1|||1||RE%3A OUTTAKE%3A S4%3A Five Bagatelles|BlackAeronaut||21:41:29|11/05/2006|Agreed%2C that probably would make a good flashback sequence.
