In his case%2C as we%27ve seen%2C his chief problem was his inability to grasp%2C or possibly just to act upon%2C the Space Force%27s need for quick command action in an immediate crisis.%0D%0A%0D%0A%28Of the other four%2C one was determined to impose a stricter chain of command no matter how many toes got stepped on and noses put out of joint%2C one resigned after reading the brief on the Irregular Projects Division%2C one turned out to be a closet member of the Church of Man%2C and one was simply incompetent in all respects.  And no%2C none of them was anyone you know.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AFilling the position with a satisfactory candidate who would actually be happy doing the job has proven much more difficult than the Chief thought it would be when he relinquished his Space Force rank back in the fall of 2409. You%27d think that wouldn%27t even be enough time to determine that someone wasn%27t going to work out%2C but the Space Force is%2C as Commodore Tenjou could tell you%2C a crucible even in peacetime.  You either get it immediately or have a psychotic episode.%0D%0A%0D%0AFor the historically curious%2C Kimball%27s name is derived from that of Admiral Husband E. Kimmel%2C commander of the U.S. Navy%27s Pacific Fleet at the outbreak of World War II.  Kimmel had the unenviable distinction of watching the Pearl Harbor attack unfold on his watch%2C and although the subsequent ruin of his career was probably uncalled-for%2C given that there were plenty of pooches to go around on Hawaii that day%2C he %28and the Army%27s General Walter Short%29 took the administrative fall for the failures that day.  In my judgment%2C he was a competent man in a situation that could only have been salvaged by a brilliant one. I%27m not sure why it was%3B I knocked it out in about%2C um%2C 15 minutes%2C but upon trying to print it found it about 97 pages long.  So whoa. I can%27t tell if it was a quick read because %28a%29 it was fairly linear%2C %28b%29 the number of new mysteries%2Fcharacters%2Fplot arcs were relatively low%2C or %28c%29 it felt like a big lead up to something else%2C and I hurried on hoping to get to that something.%0D%0A%0D%0A%282%29 Writing was fabulous.  Great job of working us through the mechanisms of the wedding%2C making the fiddly details interesting%2C and also making the romance between Utena and Corwin so _them_. %28as a side note%2C Chiho Saito owes you guys%3B you so saved his characters from the depths of amine hell%29 Some of dialogue seemed a little clunky%2C but some of the exchanges were perfect. Utena as dead on%2C as was the brief cameo of Kozue%28%21%21%29. The droid%2FLuke Skywalker..sorry%2C robot%2FCorwin Ravenhair scenes were precious.  I liked how you subtly reminded us of how _different_ these heroes are%2C esp. through the use of character behavior.  I love how Corwin shrugs off his use of coding language without even mentioning his God of Mecha status%3B and how Utena takes control to the space force without hesitation.  Having read too many stories were we are introduced again%2C and again to the characters%2C its nice to read someones who are confident in their writing and trust in the story to carry itself. %0D%0A%0D%0A%283%29 That said%2C I wasn%27t as thrilled with the supporting cast.  Sure Cage continues to be the id of the writers %28and the readers - confusion to the enemy%21%29%2C so he was fun.  Janice has her mayhem on but I couldn%27t tell - was she saying that her relationship with whats-his-name is over%3F The duelists%27 reactions were nice%2C but%2C well%2C very predictable.  Susan Ivanova was underused. Freja%27s beef with Corwin was interesting%2C and sure%2C it forwarded the plot%2C but um%2C damn did it come out of no where. Wasn%27t it Frey who used to get all medieval on Corwin%27s ass%3F  And why in the names of the gods would she risk the wrath of the Norns%3F She%27s had a good working relationship with them %28at least it seemed that way during %5Bi%5DTwilight%5B%2Fi%5D%29%2C but now its gone down hill because of Corwin%3F As well%2C Akio was strangely out of character.  Since when does he show his emotions on his face%3F  He was clearly irritated the wedding wasn%27t taking place %28or rather%2C occurring as he planned%29 and sent Nanami to do something %28perhaps to intercept Corwin%2C perhaps not%29.  He%27s not the type to make slips%2C and so something about his characterization seemed off.  Thoughts on this%3F %0D%0A%0D%0A%284%29 and no offense%2C Matrix Dragon%2C but the whole Sivar god-of-war thing didn%27t seem very%2C um%2C useful. Or topical. I%27m all for advancing Chad%27s character and giving us his back story %28you%27ve got to add the Sheep Incident to the UF homepage%29%2C but I really%2C really didn%27t get why Tyr had to step in to get him to not do something. He saw an opportunity to put the cat among the pigeons with impunity - a way to exploit certain diplomatic niceties and a goddess%27s psychological flaws in order to remind his archest enemies as baldly as possible that%2C despite their best efforts%2C they still aren%27t rid of him.  In that sense%2C his mission was still accomplished.  Raven%27s reaction alone was worth the trip.%0D%0A%0D%0ABesides%2C in all his many years%2C he%27d never been coolly dismissed by Susan Ivanova before. Ivaldi the Ancient was the greatest smith in the history of the Heavens%2C and we%27ve seen one of the three swords he made for the sons of Borr before. You can buff out the rough edges%2C but grease stains are forever.%0D%0A%0D%0A%2A On the subject of Akio%2C there are several subpoints. Akio%27s a master manipulator bar none%2C and Freyja must look like a %22HEY%21 PLEASE SOMEONE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF MY GLARING PERSONALITY WEAKNESSES%21%22 sign to him. Even a Duke of Hell would presumably be on his toes around Freyja%2C but Akio not only gets his invite%2C but clearly has her strung around his finger. While this emphasizes how far Freyja%27s fallen%2C it also%2C to me%2C pointed out how %5Bi%5Dfucking dangerous%5B%2Fi%5D Akio still is. He has a powerbase. He%27s not desperate. And the skills that REALLY made his plan at Ohtori Academy are still with him. And he just suckered a big fish as his latest pawn.%0D%0A%0D%0A- Akio%27s internal dialogue. As much as I%27m on Corwin and Utena%27s side....Akio%27s evaluation of the situation%2C and cognizance of the huge disturbance his very presence makes in the entire wedding really elevates him to the level of Magnificent Bastardy. You hate him%2C but it%27s just so FUN to watch him earn that hate%2C because he%27s so smooth at it. Interestingly%2C having watched through his eps in the series proper%2C canon Akio doesn%27t have that level of magnificent bastardy. He%27s not quite as SMUG about it as he could be%2C and UF Akio really is. It%27s a certain sense of oozing charisma...or just oozing...that comes across whenever he%27s around in Symphony.%0D%0A%0D%0A- The cantina scene. So...perfect. The fact it was the beagles just made it better.%0D%0A%0D%0A- The fact that he got away with it. Sure%2C Ivanova%27s parting shot stung his ego%2C but from a framework of Objective A%3A make wedding distinctly more unpleasant than it should be%2C he got the job done. He%27s not disappointed that he failed%2C but rather that he merely succeeded instead of hitting a home run.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bi%5D Frey shook his head.  %22Not this time. It%27s something he%27d say%2C something he%27d do%2C and it had a little Kosh the 2nd flavor to it too that really worked for the scene.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bi%5D        Once%2C Anthy might have felt fear at the knowledge that her%0D%0Atormentor of so many years%2C the revenant thing that wore her beloved%0D%0Adead brother%27s face%2C had come to this place.%0D%0A        That was a long time ago.%0D%0A        Today%2C she felt only...%0D%0A        ... what was this feeling called%3F%0D%0A        Oh%2C yes.  -Rage.-%5B%2Fi%5D%0D%0A%0D%0A%2A This is another of those scenes that the wording just works. I%27m not sure exactly where they came from%2C meta-textually%2C though my suspicions would be a little village off Cimerora. %3A%29%0D%0A%0D%0A%2A WALL-E and EVE%27s interaction throughout this story was spot-on%2C now that I%27ve seen the movie%2C especially EVE%27s attempts to get WALL-E to recognize certain more...subtle concepts.
