0|0|0|||1||The Cutting Room Floor%3A Requiem|Gryphon||01:17:26|02/16/2011|Here are a couple of fragmentary scenes that were cut from %5Bi%5DRequiem for a Lensman%5B%2Fi%5D.  In both cases I toyed with the idea of using them as the seeds for separate stories%2C but in neither case did that turn out to be necessary.  Between the released form of %5Bi%5DRequiem%5B%2Fi%5D and the coverage these events got in %5Bi%5DCorrespondence%5B%2Fi%5D%2C it%27s not really something that needs a lot more exposure %28beyond what it will inevitably get when the time comes to tell it from the other side in flashback form%2C sometime in %5Bi%5DNew Frontier%5B%2Fi%5D%2C if all goes well%29.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe first would have gone in before the scene in Truss and Nanami%27s office on B6.  There%27s nothing wrong with it%2C but I cut it because I wanted to do the reveal on board the %5Bi%5DValiant%5B%2Fi%5D%2C so that the first time the readers knew what was going on%2C they were finding out at the same time as Kaitlyn and the gang.  It%27s supposed to be their story%2C after all.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bhr%5D%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bpre%5D%5Btt%5D                        WEDNESDAY%2C JULY 15%2C 2409%0D%0A                               2%3A19 AM%0D%0A          IPS CHALLENGER%2C PATROLLING EPSILON ERIDANI SYSTEM%0D%0A%0D%0A        Suddenly%2C Gryphon was awake%2C and he wasn%27t entirely sure why.%0D%0A        He lurched up on one elbow%2C looking around in puzzlement%2C but%0D%0Athere was nothing to see%3B his stateroom was pitch-dark.  Down at the%0D%0Afoot of the bed%2C Wolfgang stirred%2C his Lens gleaming in the dark as he%0D%0Asat up.%0D%0A        %22%28Did you hear that too%3F%29%22 Gryphon asked the Lensbeagle%0D%0Asoftly.%0D%0A        %22Wha%3F%22 a voice replied - not that of the dog%2C naturally%2C%0D%0Athough Gryphon%27s puzzled%2C sleep-fogged mind momentarily entertained%0D%0Athe idea.  If Wolfgang had a voice%2C though%2C he tended to doubt it%0D%0Awould sound like that.  It wouldn%27t%27ve come from right next to him%2C%0D%0Aanyway%2C with the dog down at the foot of the bed.%0D%0A        A soft nightlight%2C built into the bulkhead by the head of the%0D%0Abed%2C came on a moment later.  It revealed the speaker%2C a pretty young%0D%0Awoman with mussed black hair%2C chalk-white skin%2C and a black spot%0D%0Aaround one sleepy eye.%0D%0A        One of the lesser-known members of what Gryphon sometimes%0D%0Ajokingly referred to as the %22grave feminine conspiracy%22 that%0D%0Aoccasionally seemed to surround him%2C Beatrice Watanabe%2C the Expert of%0D%0AJustice called Domino%2C had just stopped by on a whim to see him for a%0D%0Acouple of days.  She liked to do that from time to time%3B their%0D%0Aphysical relationship was no more serious than that%2C and sometimes a%0D%0Agood deal less.%0D%0A        Their friendship%2C however%2C was not%2C and there was real concern%0D%0Aon her face as she saw the pensive%2C vaguely unsettled look on his%0D%0Aface.  %22Hey%2C%22 she said%2C putting a hand on his forearm.  %22What%27s the%0D%0Amatter%3F%22%0D%0A        The First Lensman frowned.  %22I%27m not sure%2C Bea%2C%22 he murmured.%0D%0A%22I feel... strange.%22%0D%0A        A second later%2C the doorchime sounded.  Gryphon sat up%2C%0D%0Afeeling his unidentifiable foreboding getting deeper%2C and said%2C %22Yes%3F%22%0D%0A        The door slid open%2C casting a faint rectangle of light across%0D%0Athe floor from the night-dim corridor and silhouetting a slim shape in%0D%0Athe gloom.%0D%0A        %22Admiral%3F%22%0D%0A        %22What is it%3F%22%0D%0A        %22You%27d better come to the bridge%2C sir.%22%0D%0A%0D%0A        %22Five minutes ago we lost contact with the Z%27ha%27dum%0D%0Aexpedition%2C%22 Worlds Welfare Work Association Chief Wilton Goulet%0D%0Ainformed Gryphon from the Challenger%27s main viewer%2C less than 30%0D%0Aseconds later.  %22Lt. Morden%27s last transmission was incomplete%2C but it%0D%0Asounded like they were under attack%2C enemy unknown.  Then we lost the%0D%0Asignal%2C carrier and all.  We%27re not even hearing the ship%27s%0D%0Atransponder.%22%0D%0A        Gryphon seemed calm%2C considering%3B the only outward sign of%0D%0Aagitation he showed%2C sitting in his conn%2C was a slow tapping of the%0D%0Avambrace computer on his right forearm against the arm of the chair.%0D%0AHe regarded Goulet for a few seconds%2C seemingly lost in thought%2C and%0D%0Athen said in a tone which conveyed nothing so much as a sense of great%0D%0Asurprise%2C%0D%0A        %22I can%27t raise Kei either.%22%0D%0A        Goulet blinked.  %22You can%27t%3F%22 he blurted.  %22But you - %22%0D%0A        Gryphon nodded.  %22Exactly%2C%22 he said.  Then he got up from the%0D%0Aconn and said in a brisker tone%2C %22We%27ll check it out.  Thanks for%0D%0Aletting us know so promptly.%22%0D%0A%0D%0A        Goulet would probably have liked to discuss matters further%2C%0D%0Abut the First Lensman was in no mood to discuss anything as he strode%0D%0Athrough the corridors of his flagship with his yeoman trotting at his%0D%0Aside.%0D%0A        %22Who have we got on SA1 or equivalent here at Bajor%3F%22 he asked.%0D%0A        %22No other Experts in the system%2C%22 Lu replied%2C not needing to%0D%0Aconsult the datapad she carried.  %22Master Windu is at Babylon 6%3B so is%0D%0AJean.  Do you want them for the first team%3F%22%0D%0A        %22Yes.  Nobody else%3F%22%0D%0A        Lu shook her head.  %22Everybody else is either on assignment or%0D%0Ain New Avalon.%22%0D%0A        %22Start rousting them%2C%22 Gryphon said.  %22 Call everyone on the A%0D%0Alist and get them headed out there as fast as they can travel.  The%0D%0Aspecial list too.  There%27s a good chance we four will be getting in%0D%0Aover our heads.%22%0D%0A        %22Maybe I should go with you%2C%22 she suggested%2C but he shook his%0D%0Ahead.%0D%0A        %22I need you here%2C%22 he said.  %22You%27ll be my proxy in the%0D%0Acommand structure while I%27m occupied out there.%22%0D%0A        There was a soft%2C indistinct noise%2C and abruptly there were%0D%0Athree of Lu%2C all still trotting to keep up with the Chief.%0D%0A        %22At least take -one- of me%2C%22 said the one whose eyes were both%0D%0Aamber.%0D%0A        Gryphon shook his head again.  %22Too dangerous.%22%0D%0A        %22I was trained for Tac Div%2C%22 Luornu shot back.  %22I can take%0D%0Acare of myself.  You%27ll need me out there to coordinate everything.%22%0D%0A        The First Lensman paused%2C looking into her angry amber eyes%3B%0D%0Athen he relented%2C cracking the first faint hint of a smile she%27d seen%0D%0Aon him since going to rouse him for Goulet%27s call.%0D%0A        He sighed.  %22God knows how I%27ll ever explain it to you if I%0D%0Aget you killed%2C%22 he said.  %22OK%2C suit up.  Full HEV.  We don%27t know%0D%0Awhat we%27re going to run into out there.%22%0D%0A        Amber Lu grinned%2C saluted%2C and ran to get the appropriate%0D%0Aequipment.%0D%0A        Gryphon turned to the other two%2C who he identified by the%0D%0Amental labels %22Purple%22 and %22Middle%22.%0D%0A        %22Look%2C%22 he said%2C %22don%27t worry.  I%27ll look after her.  You.%0D%0AHowever that works.%22%0D%0A        Middle chuckled.  %22I%27ve worked for you -three years-%2C%22 she%0D%0Aobserved%2C %22and you still don%27t know the forms of address for when I%27m%0D%0Atriplicated.%22%0D%0A        Gryphon gave her a put-upon look.  %22There is%2C%22 he said%2C %22a%0D%0Ashocking dearth of reference material.%22%0D%0A        Luornu knew he was kidding with her to keep his mind off what%0D%0Awas happening%2C and she appreciated that.%5B%2Ftt%5D%5B%2Fpre%5D%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bhr%5D%0D%0A%0D%0AThe second would have gone between the last %5Bi%5DValiant%5B%2Fi%5D scene and the end titles.  I like it - it gives some more screen time to a couple of characters we don%27t see much of %28the Windu brothers%29 and introduces two new characters - but it was clearly heading somewhere that had nothing to do with %5Bi%5DRequiem%5B%2Fi%5D%2C and broke up the flow between the movement%27s d%C3%A9nouement %28particularly the scene at Mathews Memorial%29 and the post-credits epilogue%2C so I reluctantly 86ed it.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bhr%5D%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bpre%5D%5Btt%5D                        MONDAY%2C JULY 20%2C 2409%0D%0A                  NAR SHADDAA%2C OUTER RIM TERRITORIES%0D%0A%0D%0A        The crowd at Reelo%27s was pretty thin that night%2C and the few%0D%0Aregulars who were hanging around that particular member of Nar%0D%0AShaddaa%27s burgeoning fraternity of scuzzy bars were giving the back%0D%0Acorner booth a wide berth.  The denizens of this particular corner of%0D%0Athe Vertical City knew there was no percentage in tangling with a Jedi%0D%0AMaster%2C and on this particular afternoon there were -two- of them in%0D%0Athat booth.%0D%0A        Both were dark-skinned%2C completely bald humans%2C within a few%0D%0Ayears of each other in age.  One was slightly taller than the other%2C%0D%0Athe other slightly wider%2C but they bore a distinct resemblance all the%0D%0Asame - and well they should%2C since they were brothers.%0D%0A        For all that%2C there were marked contrasts between the brothers%0D%0AWindu%2C too.  Morpheus%2C the elder%2C was impeccably dressed in a%0D%0Acustom-tailored dark suit that had cost him hundreds of credits%2C%0D%0Aincluding a royal-purple vest and a steel-grey silk tie.  His black%0D%0Aovercoat of krayt dragon hide lay neatly folded on the seat beside%0D%0Ahim.%0D%0A        Morpheus regarded his younger brother Mace through mirrored%0D%0Apince-nez with a small%2C indulgent smile%2C took a sip of his tea%2C and%0D%0Asaid%2C %22You aren%27t getting enough rest.%22%0D%0A        %22The galaxy%27s like that sometimes%2C%22 Mace Windu replied%2C and he%0D%0Adid indeed sound tired.  The younger Jedi Master%2C in contrast to his%0D%0Aelder brother%2C wore the simple%2C traditional robes of his order%2C%0D%0Aadorned himself with no jewelry or shades%2C and was drinking water.%0D%0A        %22At any rate%2C to answer your question%2C%22 said Morpheus%2C %22no%2C I%0D%0Adidn%27t sense anything unusual in the Force last Wednesday.  At least%2C%0D%0Anot until the agitation of the news started sweeping through the Jedi%0D%0Awho knew her.%22%0D%0A        Mace sighed%2C nodding resignedly.  It had been the answer he%0D%0Aexpected%2C but not the one he wanted.  It seemed impossible to him that%0D%0Aone of the top Experts of Justice%2C one of the founders%2C could be%0D%0Aeliminated without the thing that did it making at least a ripple in%0D%0Athe Force%2C but none of the Jedi Mace had tracked down so far had felt%0D%0Aa thing.%0D%0A        %22Of course%2C%22 said Morpheus%2C %22we%27ll keep our eyes and ears%0D%0Aopen.  One picks up all sorts of interesting information out here on%0D%0Athe Rim.%22%0D%0A        %22All right.  If you hear anything%2C let us know.%22%0D%0A        Morpheus nodded graciously.  %22Of course%2C%22 he repeated.%0D%0A        They sat in silence for a moment%3B then Mace started to get%0D%0Aup.%0D%0A        %22Going so soon%3F%22 Morpheus asked.  %22We see each other%2C what%2C%0D%0Atwice a year%3F  We might as well at least talk for a while.%22%0D%0A        Mace looked mildly puzzled%2C as though the concept of social%0D%0Ainteraction hadn%27t occurred to him.  Then he sat back down and folded%0D%0Ahis hands in front of him.%0D%0A        %22All right%2C%22 he said.  %22How%27s your new padawan coming along%3F%22%0D%0A%0D%0A        In an alley behind the bar%2C two equally contrasting people%0D%0Awere waiting%2C a pastime for which some are better suited than others.%0D%0A        One was a young man dressed%2C like Mace Windu%2C in the robes of%0D%0Aa Jedi Knight%2C though his were of a somewhat darker color than the%0D%0AJedi Master%27s.  He had a short ruff of thick brown hair and intense%0D%0Aeyes%2C and moved with the contained grace of an athlete as he walked%0D%0Afrom the bar%27s back door to the Dumpster and back - not exactly%0D%0Apacing%2C but not immobile%2C either.%0D%0A        The other was a woman of about the same age%2C dressed so%0D%0Adifferently that it hardly seemed possible they could know each other%2C%0D%0Alet alone be there together.  Her slim body was wrapped up tightly in%0D%0Ablack plastic from neck to toes%2C complete with gloves which lacked%0D%0Apinky and index fingers.  She stood leaning against the foamcrete wall%0D%0Anext to the doorway%2C legs crossed at the ankles%2C arms folded across%0D%0Aher chest%2C the tails of her black PVC trenchcoat hanging down behind%0D%0Aher.%0D%0A        She leaned and watched the man in Jedi robes not-quite-pace%2C a%0D%0Aslight smile on her rather narrow face%2C then reached under her coat%2C%0D%0Adrew out a metal cylinder about eighteen inches long%2C and balanced it%0D%0Aon the open palm of her left hand.  It sat there inert for a moment%2C%0D%0Astudded with controls and vanes%2C a dark opening at each end.  Then it%0D%0Alevitated to about an inch above her hand and started slowly spinning.%0D%0A        The man in Jedi robes saw this when he turned around again%2C%0D%0Astopped not-quite-pacing%2C and chuckled.%0D%0A        %22Are ye tha%27 bored%2C Trinity%3F%22 he asked in a thick Scots burr.%0D%0A        Trinity stopped spinning her lightsaber and let it drop back%0D%0Ainto her hand.  %22Just practicing my fine telekinesis%2C%22 she replied%0D%0Awith an ironic smile.  %22Why would I be bored%2C Ray%3F  Morpheus has only%0D%0Aleft me standing around in this alley for - %22 She checked her watch.%0D%0A%22 - an hour and ten minutes now.%22%0D%0A        Ray laughed.  %22Aye%2C I know wha%27 ye mean%2C%22 he said.  %22It%27s one%0D%0Ao%27 their standard tricks%2C though%2C innit%3F  Master Mace once left me%0D%0Ahangin%27 round the roof of an apartment buildin%27 in New Glasgow for two%0D%0Adays.  Apparently jus%27 tae see if I%27d really hang round tha%27 long%0D%0Awi%27ou%27 runnin%27 off in search o%27 adventure.%22%0D%0A        It was Trinity%27s turn to laugh.  %22Lucky for me%2C Morpheus%0D%0Adoesn%27t believe in that kind of lesson%2C%22 she said.  %22I%27m still working%0D%0Aon the whole %27patience and serenity%27 thing%2C%22 she admitted%2C flipping%0D%0Athe saber body over her hand and catching it again.%0D%0A        %22Aye%2C well%2C who isn%27t%3F%22 Ray asked rhetorically.  He tilted his%0D%0Ahead.  %22Is tha%27 a double saber%3F%22%0D%0A        Trinity nodded.  %22Uh-huh.  I just finished it. The character%27s name is Ray Ross%2C but the intention was always for him to be %22played%22 by Ray Park - the gag evolved out of a studio joke about how it was too bad they dubbed Darth Maul%27s lines in %5Bi%5DPhantom Menace%5B%2Fi%5D%2C because he would have been hilarious as a Scotsman.  %28%22Ross%22 is the name of the character Park plays in the somewhat regrettable but entertaining %5Bi%5DBallistic%5B%2Fi%5D%3B he%27s a bad guy and doesn%27t have a first name%2C but it can safely be assumed that Ray Ross%2C Jedi padawan%2C looks like him.%29%0D%0A%0D%0A--G.%0D%0A-%3E%3C-%0D%0ABenjamin D. That said%2C what is the proper form of address for her aspects%3F  Also%2C in her source material%2C her aspects only shared memories after rejoining%2C does having a Lens change that at all for her%3F%0D%0A%0D%0APS. This is eerily timed as I%27m on a SOS read-through right now and happen to be right in the middle of Requiem For a Lensman.

In Raven%3A Blood Ties 2%3A Alternative Learning%2C when Starfire meets Raven at the cabin on Ishiyama%2C she says that she%27s only meet Gryphon on official occasions.%0D%0A

Even though these scenes didn%27t work in the final product %28and I totally see why you did what you did%29%2C they stand on their own rather well AND provide some good additional details on what%27s been going on in the background of this HUGE universe without making everyones%27 head spin.%0D%0A%0D%0AI think that had you given these to us too soon after %5Bi%5DRequiem%5B%2Fi%5D was released%2C it might have detracted from the story and sidetracked things in ways that you obviously didn%27t want.
