No one could have dreamed we were being scrutinized%2C as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.  Few men even considered the possibility of life on other planets%3B and yet%2C across the gulf of space%2C minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this Earth with envious eyes%2C and slowly and surely they drew their plans against us.%0D%0A%0D%0AAt midnight on the twelfth of August%2C a huge mass of luminous gas erupted from Mars and sped towards Earth.  I made contact with Ogilvy%2C the astronomer%2C and we hurried to his observatory.%0D%0A%0D%0AAcross two hundred million miles of void%2C invisibly hurtling towards us%2C came the first of the missiles which were to bring such calamity to Earth.  As we watched%2C there was another jet of gas.  It was another missile%2C starting on its way.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnd that%27s how it was for the next ten nights.  A flare spurting out from Mars%2C bright green%2C drawing a green mist behind it%3A a beautiful%2C but somehow disturbing%2C sight.  Ogilvy assured us we were in no danger. However%2C next day there was a huge crater in the middle of Horsell Common%2C and Ogilvy came to examine what lay there%3A a cylinder%2C thirty yards across%2C glowing hot%2C and with faint sounds of movement coming from within.%0D%0A%0D%0ASuddenly the top began moving - rotating - unscrewing%2C and Ogilvy feared there was a man inside trying to escape. One time%21 But you know what%2C they learned their lesson. Why would they even WANT Earth these days%3F Honestly%2C the place is shit. Sarmak require truly heroic medical intervention to live in that disease-ridden atmosphere%2C the Reds don%27t care%2C the Tharks view a planet that is largely artificial even in its so-called remaining %22wild%22 areas as the next best thing to hell%2C and the Malacandri are at home basically anywhere that isn%27t actively on fire%2C so they don%27t care either.
