It never occurred to him that%0D%0Athere might be animal control regulations in town that it would take%0D%0Asome time for Kaitlyn%2C even with the Avatar%27s help%2C to get into%0D%0Acompliance with.  All Serge knew was that she and Juni had gone into%0D%0Atown and left him on the island%2C and now he found himself thoroughly%0D%0Abored.%0D%0A        He considered swimming to the mainland and tracking them down.%0D%0AThe latter wouldn%27t be that hard%2C but the former would probably take too%0D%0Along.  It%27d be just his luck to get there and then discover that they%27d%0D%0Acaught the ferry while he was on his way over%2C and were now back on the%0D%0Aisland%2C wondering where he%27d got to.  Reluctantly%2C he discarded that%0D%0Aplan.%0D%0A        The young humans in the funny clothes had been a worthwhile%0D%0Adiversion for a little while%2C but they were all busy doing whatever it%0D%0Awas they were doing%2C and none of it made enough sense to Serge to remain%0D%0Ainteresting for long.  The lemurs were no help at all%3B they just cleared%0D%0Aout as soon as they spotted him coming%2C and he didn%27t care to chase%0D%0Athem%2C as he was reasonably certain this would be misinterpreted by the%0D%0Apeople as well.  As for the giant%2C shaggy creatures who lived in the%0D%0Acaves%2C they were even less interesting than the humans.  All they seemed%0D%0Ato want to do was eat hay or sleep.%0D%0A        By midafternoon%2C he%27d been reduced to prowling the crags and%0D%0Acorners of the island%2C looking for anything in any way diverting.%0D%0ANothing was forthcoming%2C and Serge had just about resigned himself to%0D%0Agoing back to the bison caves and reconsidering his interest in sleep.%0D%0AHe was on his way back there now%2C taking a shortcut across a little%0D%0Acourtyard out in back of the women%27s quarters%2C when he at last smelled%0D%0Asomething interesting - and became aware a moment later that something%0D%0Ainteresting had smelled him as well.%0D%0A        Another animal%2C not as enormous as the sky bison%2C but quite a%0D%0Abit bigger than Serge himself%2C emerged from a small outbuilding in the%0D%0Acourtyard%2C snuffling the air.  Undaunted as ever%2C Serge ambled over to%0D%0Asay hello%2C trying as he did to catalog his new acquaintance.  At first%0D%0Asight he thought it - Serge corrected himself%2C she - might simply be a%0D%0Acolossal white dog.  Her broad%2C blocky head reminded Serge of Buddy%2C the%0D%0ALabrador retriever who lived a few doors down from their old house on%0D%0ATomodachi%3B but there was something bear-like about her giant stature and%0D%0Athe way she carried herself.%0D%0A        This remarkable creature seemed equally unconcerned about the%0D%0Aappearance of a very large striped cat in her yard%3B she moseyed on over%2C%0D%0Astill sniffing thoughtfully%2C until her nose nearly touched his.  For a%0D%0Amoment they regarded each other impassively.%0D%0A        Then the dog%2C bear%2C whatever she was%2C went back to her house and%0D%0Areturned with a piece of meat%2C which she dropped in front of Serge%2C%0D%0Ahaving correctly deduced that he was the only other carnivore on the%0D%0Aisland %28since the Avatar%2C by long agreement with the management of the%0D%0AAir Temple%2C was one only when she was -off- the island%29.  Serge regarded%0D%0Ait for a moment.  He wasn%27t terribly hungry%2C having had a substantial%0D%0Abreakfast%2C but it did smell good%2C and the offer was exceedingly%0D%0Agenerous%2C so after a decent interval he bowed his head graciously%2C%0D%0Apicked up the meat%2C and neatly sheared it in two with his teeth%2C leaving%0D%0Athe other half for his host.%0D%0A        Having thus established full diplomatic relations%2C the two%0D%0Asettled down to have a bit of late lunch together.%5B%2Fpre%5D%5B%2Ftt%5D
