I%27ll grant you the first and possibly the third%2C but that %0D%0A%3Esecond one%3F  If that%27s what you think%2C that%27s troubling%2C because I %0D%0A%3E%5Bi%5Dthought%5B%2Fi%5D this whole thing was largely an exercise in what we %0D%0A%3Eused to call %22deep background%22 in the journo biz. %0D%0A%0D%0AI don%27t agree with Bodhi on this%2C the story was full of depth - as you say%2C it%27s background material.  But other than that.... I have to agree with a lot of what Bodhi wrote. If you write a story that%27s 95%25 background%2C it will contain a lot of filler material. That%27s the nature of the beast.%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Eit%27s an expanded version of a scene that %0D%0A%3Ewasn%27t%2C in itself%2C critical enough to leave in the main story.  I %0D%0A%3Etherefore realize that it%27s not exactly one of the poles holding up %0D%0A%3Ethe tent... but we%27ve done stories like that before%2C collections of %0D%0A%3Echaracter moments and little background details%2C and I%27ve never once %0D%0A%3Eseen nearly two whole days go by with %5Bi%5Dno reaction at all%5B%2Fi%5D.  It %0D%0A%3Ewas startling%2C and disheartening.  And speaking of disheartening%2C %0D%0A%0D%0AIf it was cut from the original%2C and it wasn%27t a critical scene%2C why did you decide to expand and release it anyway%3F Couldn%27t you have fit that cut scene into another story%3F%0D%0A%0D%0AThe one background story that stands out in my mind %28and you might not think of it as a background story%29 is 5 Bagatelles. Every character scene in that one advanced the plot in some way. Maybe that%27s what seems %28to me%29 to be missing here%3F Or maybe it%27s something else.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnd here%27s a new thread to maybe attract attention.%0D%0A%0D%0A%3E%3EThe sequence with Naga just didn%27t capture my %0D%0A%3E%3Einterest%2C it reads well but it gives little to care about.%0D%0A%3E%0D%0A%3EThis breaks my heart%2C because to me there%27s %5Bi%5Dso%5B%2Fi%5D much in there.  %0D%0A%3EIt%27s a glimpse into a part of Korra%27s life that even the canon has all %0D%0A%3Ebut completely ignored.  It%27s the first moment at which she and Naga %0D%0A%3Ego from %22girl with awesome pet%22 to %22adventurer and faithful steed%22%2C %0D%0A%3Ewhich is an important moment in any paladin%27s career. Heck%2C it%27s the %0D%0A%3Efirst time Korra ever managed to break out of South Pole State %0D%0A%3EPenitentiary%2C even if she didn%27t really mean to and only made it about %0D%0A%3Ea hundred yards. %3A%29 %0D%0A%0D%0AAdventurer%3F Paladin%3F I obviously need to re-read%2C because I didn%27t get anything like that.  To me it read pretty much at face value. Kid rides really big dog like a horse %28who hasn%27t tried that%2C if you had a big dog when you were a kid%3F%29%2C and makes a break to get away from the adults. %0D%0A%0D%0A%3E%3EIt was just %0D%0A%3E%3Eakin to being psyched-up for a bowl of mint ice cream and getting %0D%0A%3E%3Evanilla. %0D%0A%0D%0ABingo%21%0D%0A%0D%0A%3EIdeally%2C it would have come out closer to %5Bi%5DGoodbye and Hello%5B%2Fi%5D - %0D%0A%3Eit%27s set before %5Bi%5DFire Hazards%5B%2Fi%5D%2C even%2C within that movement - but %0D%0A%3Ethe way things ended up shaking down%2C maintaining that sequence would %0D%0A%3Ehave meant delaying %5Bi%5DFamiliar Spirits%5B%2Fi%5D until%2C well%2C %0D%0A%3E%5Bi%5Dnow%5B%2Fi%5D-ish%2C and that didn%27t seem ideal. %0D%0A%0D%0AThat delay was a bit of a problem for me as a reader%2C I think. It took me a while to figure out where I was in the overall story arc. %28Kate%27s back already%3F No wait she hasn%27t left yet%29 I don%27t think I was entirely comfortable with where this story was supposed to fit until almost the end when someone said the baby was 2 days old %28or thereabouts%29. Not knowing where I was%2C if you will%2C bothered me.  FWIW  %28And yes%2C I know there are date stamps. 6|4|3|||1||RE%3A Avatar Storytime Comments|Terminus Est||21:00:00|07/02/2014|Just to chime in with my two cents%3F  You will %5Bi%5Dnever%5B%2Fi%5D get an %27It%27s too long%27 complaint outta me.%0D%0A%0D%0AI%27m another of the %27No knowledge of the source material%27 crowd%2C and gotta say%2C the discussions I%27ve seen here do not give me the %27must watch NOW%27 feeling.  You convey the characters nicely%2C and that%27s all that matters to me.  Unfortunately%2C as has also been stated%2C it does leave me at something of a loss in the department of appreciating the rebuilding you%27ve done - BUT%2C I can say with some certainty that I %5Bi%5Ddo%5B%2Fi%5D quite like them as a cold reader.%0D%0A%0D%0AAs far as this piece in particular goes... well%2C it has high points%2C and it has low points.  As a background piece%2C it%27s beautiful - Korra%27s first ride in particular was a very enjoyable experience.  I must say%2C however%2C that I am looking forward to some action in the next piece.  Not because this one was slow - I understand that every writer has to do a piece like this every now and again%2C just to recharge the batteries and provide background for Things To Come - but because%2C well... -action-.  You do action sequences really%2C REALLY damn well.%0D%0A%0D%0AFanboy note time%3A  You and the others are%2C collectively%2C one of my three favorite authors.  Period.  Thank you for the amazing work to date%2C and I sincerely look forward to more.

No more going to a different story for the end of a scene %28such as when Korra%27s photo album was brought to her%2C but you had to read %5Bi%5DAvatar Storytime%5B%2Fi%5D to see the rest of the scene%2C while the main story went onto other things%29. Less necessary %28IMO%29 but nice to see was having things referred to but not seen moved to this story as well %28such as %5Bi%5DFire Hazards%5B%2Fi%5D%29. I thought it had more of a feel of Things Happening than some of the individual parts did as stand-alones. I thought the merge points were handled very cleanly%2C and it overall came together and flowed nicely. So I%27ve put it back even in the non-Director%27s Cut version%2C because it ends up being referenced in the part that I%27m working on now%2C anyway.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AAnyway%21  Good to know it made more sense%2C and that the nearly 400K length it ended up at wasn%27t a problem. I prefer vanilla%2C actually. %0D%0A%0D%0AThis story was an anecdotal%2C slice-of-life piece. No grand action%2C no major developments%2C just personal moments and character insights. But to me%2C at least%2C that%27s good stuff. That%27s always been my favourite part of the Eyrie stories.%0D%0A%0D%0AAside from the character interactions%2C the Diqiu material also represents a significant amount of worldbuilding. And that%27s nice to see as well. I%27m one of those people who%27s only vaguely familiar with the Avatar source material. But I don%27t really feel that%27s a huge barrier to entry. That%27s something I%27d really like to see%2C and probably a lot of people on this forum would%2C too.

Heck%2C I could see enough potential vignettes to make it into it%27s own little saga%2C like the Sterling sisters%27 stories%2C which would probably be a very good reason to loop back after one or two %28or three or four%29 of the other massive irons in the fire has been worked%2C quenched%2C and placed on the rack.

This story helped me a lot%2C I never heard of any of this before- and your writing makes me want to find the series%2C much like you did for me with Utena. %0D%0A%0D%0AI will say- the first scene with Naga--%3E loved it%2C and I saw where it seemed to be going.%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0AI look forward to writings%2C and keep checking 2-3 times a week. I%27m really happy I can read them on my iPhone%2C I can%27t sit %40 a computer white screen for hours like I used to 5 years ago%2C but lying in bed with an iPhone or iPad is perfect.
