0|0|0|||1||A Minor Reorg|Gryphon||21:32:21|08/05/2014|So I was looking through the early parts of %5Bi%5DSymphony No. 5%5B%2Fi%5D yesterday%2C thinking about what could be done to tighten it up a little%2C and the first thing I was reminded of was what an awkward beast the S5 %5Bi%5DPrelude in A Minor%5B%2Fi%5D is.  More than half of it takes place before the end of %5Bi%5DSymphony No. 4%5B%2Fi%5D%2C for no better reason than it involves scenes I hadn%27t thought of before finishing that Symphony off%2C and the transitions are a bit awkward.%0D%0A%0D%0ASo I thought about it for a while%2C and tried a couple of different permutations%2C and this is what I came up with.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe opening scenes%2C which are set on Jeraddo in September of 2409 - in between %5Bi%5DIn for a Penny%5B%2Fi%5D and %5Bi%5DThe Revolution Will Be Televised%5B%2Fi%5D - are now part of %5Bi%5DIn for a Penny%5B%2Fi%5D.  The first act of the story involves Utena%27s clash with Bastila over the Duelists%27 Castle and the start of her autumn as IPSF Commodore - one sense of being %22in for a penny%22%3B the second act%2C transplanted in from the old %5Bi%5DPrelude%5B%2Fi%5D%2C now involves what the Duelists of Jeraddo get up to at the beginning of the school year%2C and Ezri Tigan%27s unexpected arrival and first test among them - another sense of being %22in for a penny%22.%0D%0A%0D%0AMeanwhile%2C the scene in which B%27Elanna O%27Brien volunteers for the Klingon Forces becomes %5Bi%5DTelevised%5B%2Fi%5D%27s fifth epilogue.  As it deals directly with the effects of the Klavaarite coup on the lives of the characters involved in it%2C and fits there chronologically%2C I think it makes sense for it to be there%2C and not in a story situated in the following Symphony.%0D%0A%0D%0AOf the %5Bi%5DPrelude%5B%2Fi%5D%27s remaining scenes%2C all but one are set after the 2410 New Year and %5Bi%5DVortigern%27s 2%5B%2Fi%5D%2C and the one that doesn%27t - Kate and co. on Ishiyama in mid-December%2C a week or so before %5Bi%5DVortigern%27s 2%5B%2Fi%5D - deals directly with the setup of what she and Juniper are doing in S5%2C namely moving to New Avalon.  As such%2C they can stay where they are%2C in a cut-down opening piece to S5 now called %5Bi%5DOverture in A Minor%5B%2Fi%5D.%0D%0A%0D%0AThese are structural and logistical changes only%2C involving no actual alteration to the material itself.  The affected scenes all still happened as and when they happened in the story - they%27re just presented in more logical places than the constraints of when they were originally written allowed for%2C and should a%29 make more sense to new readers%2C if any and b%29 help the transition between S4 and S5 flow more smoothly.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe new versions are in place on the S4 and S5 index pages%2C just where the versions they replaced used to be. 1|1|0|||||RE%3A A Minor Reorg|Droken||23:18:36|08/05/2014|Oh cool.%0D%0A%0D%0AI%27ve always kind of seen Prelude as a weirdly-off-kilter piece that%2C while it nicely set up the lead-in for Ash Knight at the end%2C otherwise broke my mental flow of time. This adjustment sounds like it will not only fix that %22problem%22%2C but also build a bit more breadth to In for a Penny %28adding some more %22what everyone else is up to%22%29 and putting all of the formative parts of the Klayvor coup in one well-established spot. Very nice.
