That%27s a little more in line with general expectations about this sort of thing%2C and allows for the ship to be fully operational 24-7 with three complete watches rotating %28like a real-life naval warship%29.%0D%0A%0D%0AOn the other hand%2C the crew complement of the bird-of-prey in %5Bi%5DStar Trek III%5B%2Fi%5D%2C the first one to appear in the canon%2C is explicitly stated in the film as %22about a dozen%22%2C and Commander Kruge appears to have only two lieutenants %28Torg and Maltz%29 - but there is never a single indication in %5Bi%5DStar Trek III%5B%2Fi%5D that Kruge%27s ship even %5Bi%5Dhas%5B%2Fi%5D an engineer or science officer%2C and he might%27ve had a third lieutenant before he disintegrated the weapons officer%3B there%27s no indication of whether that guy was an officer%2C or even if the Klingons of that era even had them%2C as such%2C but he was the one operating the weapons on the bridge%2C which in UF%2C at least%2C is an officer%27s job.%0D%0A%0D%0ASo%2C we have a situation where I wanted Jurdak%27s ship to have a %22night shift%22 where not much was happening%2C which argued for the smaller %22skeleton crew%22 staffing of movie-Kruge%27s ship%2C but the way the KDF is organized in UF meant there would have to be at least four lieutenants%2C five if you include the first officer %28and Jurdak needed one because he could barely be bothered to operate the ship himself%29.%0D%0A%0D%0AIf it helps%2C you may consider that Jurdak was well-known as one of the worst captains in the Seventh Fleet%2C and people would do almost %5Bi%5Danything%5B%2Fi%5D to avoid having to serve on his ship.
