They were far enough from land now that surf wasn%27t an issue%2C though in some part of his mind%2C he couldn%27t shake the impression that he could still %5Bi%5Dfeel%5B%2Fi%5D it%2C looming behind them.%0D%0A%0D%0ATurning to the other person in the boat%2C he asked%2C %22Anything%3F%22%0D%0A%0D%0AIona sat quietly for a moment%2C as if she%2C too%2C were listening for something%3B then she shook her head and replied%2C %22I%27m not detecting anything%2C but my scan range is limited%2C%22 she added%2C a very faintly apologetic tone creeping into her voice.%0D%0A%0D%0A%22Mm%2C%22 Corwin not-really-replied. Corwin gazed thoughtfully down at her for a few moments %28he had little choice in the matter%2C given that he stood more than a head taller%29%2C then closed his eyes and raised his left hand%2C touching a fingertip to the silver cuff earring he wore.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe runic engraving on that earring glowed at his touch%2C dimly at first%2C then more brightly.  The brand on his forehead glowed with it%2C and as the light brightened%2C its shape changed%2C the simple circle with a dot in the center becoming two concentric rings%2C linked and slightly overspread by three equidistant lines%2C a bit like a gunsight.  He wasn%27t %5Bi%5Dbreaking%5B%2Fi%5D the seal that kept most of his divine power in check for Midgard%27s sake%3B rather%2C he was dialing it momentarily back%2C so as to access more of that power for this one specific purpose.%0D%0A%0D%0APlacing his hands on Iona%27s slim shoulders%2C he opened his eyes%2C looked straight into hers%2C and began to speak - his voice low%2C but charged with that fresh infusion of power%3A%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bi%5DFallen warrior who sleeps in this place%2C%0D%0ACut down in defeat by an ungracious victor%2C%0D%0AHear me.%5B%2Fi%5D%0D%0A%0D%0AOff to the east%2C the dawn broke%2C the first diamond arc of the sun springing into sight and spreading its orange rays across the surface of the sea. Fizzing slightly with a discharge of excess energy%2C the brand fell back to its normal configuration%2C its glow and that of his earring going out... and for a moment%2C that seemed to be all that was happening.  Looking faintly puzzled%2C Iona gave him an inquisitive tilt of her head.%0D%0A%0D%0ACorwin smiled slightly and released her shoulders%2C wiping a light sweat from his brow with one forearm.  %22Wait for it%2C%22 he said%2C resuming his seat and gesturing for her to do the same.  %22It%27s a long way down from here...%22%0D%0A%0D%0AAs she sat down%2C Iona was about to ask %5Bi%5Dwhat%5B%2Fi%5D was a long way down when%2C a few dozen yards off the Zodiac%27s port bow%2C the sea began suddenly to boil.  Or at least that%27s what it looked like - the surface upheaving and sliding away%2C as when the hot bottom mass of water begins convecting to the surface just before the onset of a good rolling boil.  No bubbles%2C but a massive disturbance all the same as if something %5Bi%5Denormous%5B%2Fi%5D were forcing its way up through the sea...%0D%0A%0D%0A... until%2C in a tremendous geyser of spray%2C a vast grey-and-red shape lunged up through the surface%2C like a freight train roaring out of a tunnel%2C but at a near-vertical upward angle.  It climbed inexorably higher until it towered like a strangely angled office building.  Gleaming and wet%2C it hung suspended for a long%2C impossible-seeming moment%2C then crashed mightily down to the horizontal%2C hurling out a wave that made the Zodiac buck like an airplane in a storm.%0D%0A%0D%0AIona%27s sea-green eyes%2C never particularly narrow%2C now went even wider than usual as she recognized the massive object%2C its lines as familiar to her as those of her own face.  Probably more so%2C since long before Iona existed as the petite silver-haired young woman now unconsciously rising back to her feet in the still-rocking Zodiac%2C the shape she was now looking at had been her own%3A a submarine%2C vast but sleek%2C her upper deck dominated by a great cylindrical structure %28itself the size of some smaller subs%29 and an off-center conning tower.
