"Mechanical fun"

One of the thing's that's always amazed me about the Oh My Goddess manga is Kousuke Fujishima's master of of both character design AND mechanical drawing. For those of you that don't know or haven't noticed, his motorcycle and car drawings are always draftsman-perfect. If they're actual existant machines then they're perfect down to the tired treads (I know because I've checked his Ducati drawings against the real thing, ditto with the chapter with the Shelby Mustang rally car) and if they're fictional (like the enduro tricyle or the tiny hillclimbing bike) then they're still convincing. I've been riding and playing with motorcycles for over ten years and Fujishima-sensei has yet to depict something I found unlikely, farfetched, or even sketchy. The attention to detail is always wonderful.

(I'm going to get to the point here any minute now.)

One reason I look forward to subsequant GW chapters is my confidence in the Eyrie writers to translate this mechanical fetish into prose. Gryphon's recent interest in racing (even if it is NASCAR, which I find terminally boring. Give me World Superbike or Formula 1 any day) further improves my estimation of the GW future.

Incidentally, the OMG anime did not do nearly as well in this mechanistic aspect. I hope that the Eyrie folks will take note of the superior depth of story and greater visual detail evident in the manga. (You DO read the comic monthly, RIGHT? ^_^)

Woo, off to Chinese class, too late to check for typos.

You think stock car racing is boring and yet you watch F1? At least there's occasional passing in stock cars. :)

Actually, I like all of those mentioned, as well as many other types (touring car, local stockers, World of Outlaws, American Le Mans, whatever). I've even been known to get into drag racing. It's too much to follow all at once, though, so I tend to tune up and down the motorsports dial a lot.

I used to write online columns for a racing website, Tony Johns's now-defunct Racing Point of View. Maybe I should dig up my copies of those and put them up somewhere in the Lab & Grill now that RPOV is gone.

Wrong. I do pick up the comps whenever I happen to notice another one has come out, though.

I'm actually more of a Taiho Shichauzo fan than an Aa! Megami-sama! fan, which means that the girls from Taiho are probably going to assume more prominent roles in the GW cast as (when)(if) the project progresses...

Well, maybe not F1. I'm not a big auto racing fan in general, for
exactly that reason -- there's never enough passing, because the cars
are too dang wide! Most I follow World Superbike and AMA Motorcross
nowadays.

I love Sports Car racing (like Le Mans and whatnot). Anything that
involves racing based off cars or bikes one can actually buy gets
the Starrynight Seal of Approval.

Oh, that's cool. I'm more of a "fan" now than an "otaku", but I'll always
have a soft spot for OMG -- and thus, I'll need my monthly fix.

That's a great title. I just love Fujishima's sense of humor, so I trust
y'all to preserve it in the transition to Eyrie fanfiction. Eventually.
Maybe. ^_^

It's because Kousuke Fujishima is a motorhead (I hope I used that term right). He loves motorcycles according to the preface/forward in "1-800-GODDESS". So, the detail probably comes from his years of playing with motorcycles... Like Keiichi.

>Incidentally, the OMG anime did not do nearly as well in this mechanistic aspect.

Yeah, but we did get to hear Bell's voice (I prefer the dub), so it evens out in my book. ;-)

Oh, of that I have no doubt. That kind of detail doesn't just come out of nowhere -- you have to revel in mechanical elegance in order to draw, say, an old BMW Boxer the way Fujishima does.

I'd love to go on a ride with the guy some day. Show him my favorite roads, say.

Ack, dub! I've never heard it, but the Japanese version featured the ethereal voice of Inoue Kikuko for Belldandy, which just *made* the character. I can't imagine anybody else, English or Japanese, doing nearly as good a job. Kikuko IS Belldandy, as far as I'm concerned.

But you're entitled to your opinion. ^_^

Perhaps, but the OMG dub had the benefit of being done by Coastal Carolina, who, for my money, are the best English dubbing studio out there. Kikuko Inoue might be the canonical Belldandy, but Tamara Burnham is the definitive Natsumi Tsujimoto - even Fujishima thinks so. :)

Oddly enough, I like both. AMS/OMG and Tenchi Muyo are the only anime I have ever seen where the company that dubbed them actually bothered to pick voices that suited the characters. Kikuko Inoue will always be the voice of Belldandy to me, but the dubbed voice is also beautiful. In fact, I'm trying to complete both the subbed and dubbed collections, so that I can enjoy either depending on my mood. (Besides, they have different spine art.)

Don't misunderstand, though, I have heard the sub-titled version (from tape/episode 2, which I forget the title of currently) and I'm not putting down the Japabnese Voice Actor, Inoue Kikuko (I am terible with names, artists, etc.). I just like the dubbed voice because she sounds more bubbley, naive, caring, and sweet, just how I imagine Bell sounding. I suppose -- heck, I admit -- if I knew Japanese and could recognize inflections and such by ear, I'd probably change my opinion. Of course, and here's a place where I'll admit just how sweet the Japanese Voice Actor sounds, on the OMG/AMS soundtrack, volume 2, there a song that Bell sings in achepela. THAT is very sweet and how I imagine Bell to sound too. So, I guess it's my own ignorance of the Japanese language. Still, no matter the language or land, Bell's got the kind of voice that makes you bite your lip and sigh out of envy of Keiichi.

Thankfully! ;-)
