The sun in the sky is crescent-shaped, half-eclisped by the planet's moon, so the planet is only as light as early evening on Earth. A beat-up cargo ship flies past at high speed, followed by a police craft. Cut to interior of police craft, where the co-pilot speaks into a hand-held mike.] CO-PILOT Twilight Police calling unidentified freighter! You are ordered to land your craft immediately! Repeat, land this craft *immediately*! PILOT Forget it, Steve. You're wasting your time. Gimme that! [He grabs the mike.] Freighter! This is your last warning! If you don't start landing this crate in ten seconds, we're gonna blow your ass out of the sky! [He slams the mike into its hook.] There! We finally caught up to these bastards; I'll be damned if I'll let 'em get away now! Count to ten, and if they don't respond, open-- [A panel slides open on the freighter, revealing a large, nasty-looking gun.] PILOT --fire? [With a single shot, the freighter blows the police craft to smithereens.] [The freighter accelerates. Cut to orbit, where the freighter comes rocketing up. Automated satellites attack the ship, but it displays remarkable manuevering ability in dodging the shots and missiles, while using its own gun to take out some of the satellites. It gets past the satellites, then warps.] [TITLE] [Establishing shot of Damocles Tower, still leaning from its run-in with the Pair years ago. Cut to the apartment of the Lovely Angels, where Kei is having a grand old time reading something on the living room comscreen.] KEI "Oh, Yuri, how I long to caress the fine black silk of your hair..." (hee hee) "it cascades gently over your perfect shoulders, like twilight gently replaces the day..." Oh, gawd. I'm gonna barf. (giggle) He may be lovestruck, but he's a lousy poet. "How I long to feel your warm breath on my neck, and to nibble your perfect toes..." Whoa, he's kinky, too. [Yuri's angry face appears reflected in the screen.] Uh-oh. YURI [furious] What do you think you're doing, reading my mail! KEI I can't help it if you don't bother to use a security code! YURI I will now! I trusted you, Kei. Say... [An evil grin spreads across Yuri's face.] You don't use one either. Let's see what interesting mail *you* got today! KEI Uh, hey, waitaminnit--! [Yuri pushes her out of the way and hits a few buttons.] YURI Don't worry Kei, most of your boyfriends never learned to write. Wow, you haven't even read your letters yet. Not very responsible of you, Kei. KEI Look, I'm sorry, okay?! I won't do it again! YURI Too late! Hmm, junk mail, junk mail, you may already be a winner, hmm, hmm, hmm. Oh! This looks like a winner. Who's "Robin", Kei? I never heard of that one. KEI [startled] W-what? YURI It's from "Robin Legan". Are you hiding boyfriends from me again? Let's see what exciting stuff he has to say about you. KEI D-don't touch that! YURI It's only fair, Kei. You read *my* mail. [She activates the letter. A photograph of a man in his 30's appears.] Cute guy. "Dearest Kei, I am being held prisoner on the planet Twilight, please come as soon as possible--"??! [Kei laughs nervously.] KEI It's...it's probably just a joke. I'll forward it to the 3WA in the morning. YURI But Kei, if this guy thinks he knows you-- [Kei flies off the handle] KEI Dammit, will you drop it!! I said I was sorry for reading your mail! [Yuri is startled by Kei's sudden outburst, and it shows.] Look, Yuri, I'll make it up to you. Let's go shopping. I'll...I'll buy you a new dress! For your date. [Yuri's eyes light up.] YURI You mean it?! [She Kei a big hug.] Oh, wow, Kei. You can read my letters any time! I'm gonna go get ready. [She runs out of the room.] KEI Sure. [She starts to leave as well, but stops and looks nervously back toward the commscreen.] [Another view of Damocles Tower, only by now night has fallen.] [Cut to a view of a sleeping Yuri, then to outside her room, where Kei tiptoes past Yuri's door, in uniform. Once past, she sighs in relief. Yuri's eyes open.] [Cut to Elenore City at night. Kei speeds past in the Angel's car, followed at a discreet distance by Yuri on a motorcycle. Mughi rides in a sidecar, looking rather comical in a helmet.] [Kei arrives at the spaceport, and enters the hangar where the Lovely Angel is stored. She hits a button on a remote, and the hatch opens, extending stairs. She starts up.] YURI KEI! KEI Aw, damn. YURI You were just gonna leave without me?! KEI It's personal, Yuri! YURI I don't care! We're a team, Kei. If you're going to be in danger, then we should be together. [Kei thinks about it.] KEI Alright, c'mon! YURI Great! [She walks up the steps after Kei, followed by Mughi lumbering after.] So what's going on? KEI [from inside] I'll tell you when we're in orbit! [A shot of the Lovely Angel taking off and reaching orbit. Cut to Kei and Yuri on the bridge. Mughi snoozes in the background.] YURI Robin was your *fiancee*?! KEI Yeah. It was before I met you, Yuri. YURI But you couldn't have been more than sixteen! KEI Fifteen, actually. Oh, we weren't gonna do it right away. He said we'd wait until I was a little older and see if I still wanted to do it. He was a lot older than me, but I was so in love... YURI What happened to him? KEI He died! At least, that's what I had heard. He was a geological scientist, see, and when Vizorium was discovered on Twilight, he was sent there to help with the setting-up of mining operations. But his ship crashed and exploded when it got there. YURI But then the letter has to be a fake, right? KEI Well, no body was ever found. If he *is* still alive, I have to rescue him. YURI Then will you marry him? KEI I don't know. Maybe. [Yuri thinks. Images go through her mind of Kei cooking and cleaning (in an apron with a caricature of Mughi on it), and looking after unruly kids. Yuri starts to giggle.] KEI WHAT'S SO DAMN FUNNY??!! [Kei is cut off before she can continue her tantrum, by the Lovely Angel's comm. Yuri answers it, and a furious Goulet appears on the screen.] GOULET Where the hell do you girls think you're going?! YURI We just--! GOULET Never mind! Whatever it is, you're going to have to postpone it! I have an assignment for you. KEI But--! GOULET There's a group of Vizorium smugglers the local government has been completely unable to stop. Nobody can find their mine, and they use a new trick for each shipment. The last time they hid a pulse-cannon inside a 30-year-old freighter and destroyed the police cruiser they sent to stop it. KEI But--! GOULET We think they're selling the stuff to terrorists, or possibly that they're terrorists themselves. You're to go there and root these bastards out so the local forces can better deal with the situation. I'll upload complete details into the Lovely Angel's computer. YURI Where did you say this was? [Goulet slaps his head.] GOULET I can't believe I forgot. Twilight, it's the planet Twilight. [Kei and Yuri look at each other, then crack up laughing.] Did I say something funny? [Cut to a view of the planet Twilight from high orbit. The Lovely Angel glides by. Cut to Kei and Yuri in the pilot and co-pilot's seats. Mughi remains asleep.] YURI Lovely Angel to Orbital Control, please come in. COMM This is orbital control... YURI We'd like an orbit for-- [The voice, a recording, continues right over her.] COMM ...this planet is currently quarantined for security reasons. Do not attempt lower orbit without first transmitting the correct security code. If you do not have the correct code, wait in a high orbit and you will be escorted down-- [Yuri cuts it off.] YURI Let's see, what was that code Goulet gave us? [She types it into a console.] 4...1...2...7...3...6. That should do it. [She hits "TRANSMIT". Alarms go off on the bridge.] KEI Uh, Yuri? I don't think it liked your code. [The satellites let loose a barrage of missiles.] HANG ON!! [Kei throws the Lovely Angel into a series of tight manuevers, dodging the missiles which attempt to follow. The guns on the satellites lock on and begin firing. One shot scores a glancing hit on the ship.] KEI & YURI YAAH! [Mughi is jolted awake. He yawns, rolls over, and goes back to sleep.] KEI Shoot the satellites! Shoot them! YURI Hold this thing still long enough for me to get a lock and I will! KEI If I hold still, we'll be blown to pieces!! COMM Twilight Security to Lovely Angel! Come in, please!! [Yuri hits a switch and a nervous, sweating military officer appears on the screen.] YURI This is the-- [The ship takes another hit.] AAH!--the Lovely Angel! COMM There was a screw-up at headquarters! You have the wrong code! YURI [sarcastic] You don't say?! COMM The correct code is 719452! But it must be transmitted from your location, or the satellites will just open fire again! Hurry! YURI Understood! [She cuts the guy off, and starts typing the code in.] 7...1...9...4...5...2. [She hits "TRANSMIT".] [For a moment, nothing changes. Kei gasps as she realizes the mistake she's made: she's just flown into a crossfire. Just as it appears all is lost for the Dirty Pair, all the satellites shut down.] KEI & YURI YEAH! [The Angels hug each other in relief.] KEI Wow, Yuri. They don't come much closer than that. [A stray missile, sputtering and obviously malfunctioning, impacts the ship squarely on the engine section. Kei and Yuri yell as they are knocked out of their seats. Mughi wakes up with a yelp as he bounces off the back wall. The Lovely Angel begins to spiral down toward the planet.] YURI [shouting over the noise] Kei, can you pull us out?! KEI I don't think so! The engines are too damaged! There is a bright side, though! YURI What's that?! KEI We're gonna crash right near where we were gonna land anyway! We'll be right where we want to be! If we don't get killed, of course! YURI [sarcastically] What luck! [The Lovely Angel comes barreling down out of the sky over a rocky wasteland, heat-shield flaring red. Pulling with all her might, Kei barely manages to level out somewhat before impact. The Lovely Angel bounces once, twice, three times, breaks a wingtip, and finally skids for several kilometers before finally coming to a stop, bent, blackened, and smoking.] [Kei and Yuri are unconscious. Mughi's tongue brings Kei to, groaning.] KEI [to Mughi] Ugh. Knock it off. Figures you'd still be okay. You're so roly-poly, you probably bounced. [Kei slowly gets up.] Hey, Yuri. You in one piece? YURI I think so. How about you? KEI I'm fine. Let's go see what's left of our ship. [Outside the ship, the Angels survey the damage. Their breath is visible, thanks to the planet's chilly climate.] KEI It's not as bad as it looks. I'll bet a week in the shop will have it as good as new. YURI Maybe so, but until then we're not going anywhere. What do we do now? KEI The coordinates Robin gave me are only about eighty kilometers in that direction. [She points.] If our hovercycles are still working, we could get there in less than an hour. YURI Okay. But I gotta put a jacket on first. I'm freezing! I don't know how the people here can stand having only half a sun. [The Angels zoom toward their destination on a pair of hoverbikes. Time passes and they arrive at the mouth of a large cavern.] KEI Well, this is the place! YURI Do we have to go in there. It's awfully dark. KEI That's why our bikes have headlights! C'mon! [The Pair heads inside. The cavern leads into a tunnel, which branches into several more. A beeping noise causes Kei to remove a small device from her belt and examine it.] KEI Hey! I got it! YURI Got what? KEI [excited] The radio signal Robin told me to follow! He's here! He's alive!! YURI Then stop shouting! If he was telling the truth, then the terrorists are here, too! KEI [quietly] Sorry. [The girls continue their search. Kei slows her bike and motions for Yuri to stop. Kei gets off with the receiver and searches the area. She notices something on the ground and picks it up, a ring. She holds it to the receiver, which goes crazy.] KEI [softly] Damn... YURI Robin's ring? KEI Yeah... I guess we're too late. YURI Not necessarily. He might have left it here for you to find as a marker to take to the authorities. In any case, we should probably head back to the ship and tell the locals what we know. KEI Yeah. Let's go. [The girls get back on their bikes, a look of disappointment still on Kei's face.] [The Pair bikes down several of the tunnels, all of which look alike.] KEI Which way did we come in? YURI [pointing] I think this way. [The Pair travel some more, seeming to make no progress.] YURI Weren't we here before? KEI I don't know! It all looks the same! [The Angels travel a little longer, then their bikes lose power. They begin to walk, holding handlights.] KEI Do you think we could get a signal to Mughi? YURI That depends on how deep we are. We'd be more likely to tip off the terrorists, I'm afraid. [The girls walk slowly through the caverns, which seem even darker now than before. Kei's stops dead.] YURI What is it? KEI I thought I heard something... [click] GET DOWN!! [Kei tackles Yuri as a shot rings out. The girls sit up, draw their guns, and shine their lights everywhere, to no avail.] YURI Show yourself! [Kei searches in one direction, only to be attacked from behind. A black-gloved arm grabs her by the neck, while another arm holds the gun to her head.] VOICE Drop your weapons! Now! KEI R-Robin? VOICE [startled] Kei? Kei-chan?!! [The man lets Kei go. She turns around, the light revealing a handsome, brown-haired man in his early thirties.] KEI Robin. It's really you! ROBIN Kei-chan!! [The two old lovers embrace passionately and tearfully.] YURI [to herself] "Kei-chan"?? ROBIN I thought I'd never get the chance to hold you again... KEI I thought you were dead! Your ship crashed! ROBIN No, it was hijacked, for the sole purpose of kidnapping me. They crashed my ship after transferring me to another. C'mon, we better move. We can talk about it on the way. [The three start walking.] YURI You know your way around here? ROBIN I've lived here for almost five years. I should. This terrorist group...calls itself the Hand of Fate...they've been holding me prisoner, forcing me to help them refine Vizorium. YURI Then you know where the mine is? ROBIN Ohhhh, yes. And I'll be more than happy to give you the information, once we're the hell out of this place. [The three turn a corner into a larger cave.] I've been planning my escape for years. It wasn't until I learned from news broadcasts that my Kei-chan had joined the 3WA that the last piece fell into place. YURI How'd you get the message out? ROBIN Not all of the Hand are complete bastards. A few are getting sick of holding a hostage. I managed to convince one to send Kei my letter. Oh! About that! I'm sorry about dropping the ring like I did. As you probably figured out, my captors were using it to track me. [Kei stops in her tracks.] You, uh... You did figure it out, didn't you? [Kei gives a nervous laugh and produces the ring from a pocket.] Oh, no! You've got to get rid of that thing before-- VOICE Too late. [Kei whips out her gun and fires at the voice, but there is no way to tell in the darkness whether or not she hit anything. Two well-aimed shots take out the girls' handlights. They try to fight blind, with some success, until other lights come on, revealing a gorgeous brunette with a knife at Robin's throat.] BRUNETTE Drop your guns, or I drop him. [The girls do as they're told.] Spray 'em. [A man with a spray can sprays Kei and Yuri, who fall unconscious.] [Kei comes around. She is chained to the wall, dungeon- style, with Yuri next to her.] YURI Kei? KEI! KEI Whuh? What is it? Where are we? YURI We're still in the caverns, being held prisoner, remember? KEI Oh, yeah. Right. [She takes a look at the surroundings.] Chains? That the best they can do? YURI Well, it's enough. Kei, I'm scared. KEI What, of this? We've been in worse scrapes before. YURI Kei, even if we do escape, how will are we going to find our way out? We have no idea where we are! KEI We'll rescue Robin first, and he'll lead us out. YURI Even then, how will we get to the ship? I can't even remember where it is! We could die before we walk there? KEI Yuri, calm down. In the first place, we won't have to walk, we'll steal something to ride in. In the second, it's only eighty kilometers due magnetic west from where we came in. It only took us forty-five minutes to ride here, remember? It'll be alright, honest! YURI Thanks, Kei. You're a real friend. [Yuri smiles wickedly.] KEI Huh? What're you...
