--- Part 3 --- [Scene: Becker's lab. The lab is big, but not roomy, being as it is cluttered with dozens of mysterious-looking devices. Our five heroes wander about, taking it all in (except for Trevor; he's seen it all before).] STEVE God, will you look at all this crap? JOHN It's like we've wandered onto the set of a 50's sci-fi movie. [Becky is looking at a hand-sized device. Suddenly it sprouts legs and wriggles out of her hand.] BECKY YAAH!! [Ron and Trevor are at another side of the lab.] RON Where is Becker, anyway? TREVOR [pointing] Up there. [Becker is hanging upside down, asleep, from a bar mounted on the wall. He is entangled in wires and bits of machinery.] BECKER Huh...wha? Oh, hi, Trevor! Are these those friends you were telling me about? TREVOR Uh-huh. We thought we'd give you some help on the dimensional energy project. BECKER [getting down] And I suppose you all want extra credit as well? RON If it's not too much to ask... BECKER [walking away, the five behind him] Not at all. In fact, if this project works as planned, I can guarantee each of you an extra letter grade. [The students show various expressions of surprise and delight. Cut to a cleared-away section of the lab. A pyramid-shaped frame (square base, triangular sides) stands there. In the center of the frame stands a pedestal on top of which is a device that looks a great deal like a high-powered automobile engine.] BECKER This here is the dimensional energy extractor. It has a few bugs to be worked out, but if we can get it going, it could solve the world's energy problem. JOHN You mean a few of these things could, like, replace all the power plants? BECKER Nope. Just this one. Where the hell is that socket wrench... JOHN Just this one? STEVE For the whole damn planet? TREVOR See, Becker's pet theory is that there exist parallel dimensions whose space is filled with, well for lack of a better term, "pure energy". By tapping into these alternate universes, he hopes to create a practically limitless source of power. BECKY Don't take this the wrong way, but isn't this a little, well, weird to be supported by the university? BECKER Of course it is. That's why the grant proposal was for "cold fusion research". [He rummages through a pile of equipment and comes up with five hand-held meters.] I'd like you to take some readings for me. It's perfectly safe. [Cut to a few moments later. Trevor stands near the engine-like device with a meter; the others take readings at the corners. The device is humming softly.] STEVE Perfectly safe, huh? If I die, Trevor, I swear I'm gonna kill you. BECKER Relax, it's harmless. We're not extracting any energy at all. We're simply feeling our way around. JOHN So I shouldn't be worried about that little red light on your console? BECKER Red light? [Examining the console.] Hmm... That's odd. That should only be possible if we... hooked onto an identical system. Ridiculous. Still, to be safe, you'd better come out. [The five attempt to leave, and run into a barrier. (It looks like they're walled in by glass.)] RON Uh, professor? We seem to be stuck... BECKER [confused] That's, uh, a safety feature... I don't understand what's happening... BECKY Well, *do* something!! [Becker yanks the plug out of the wall. Instead of shutting down, the machine starts to hum louder and alarms go off. Becker starts to really panic.] BECKER This can't be happening. This is impossible. STEVE Gee, thanks, that makes me feel so much better!! [Becker grabs an ax and starts to hack at the machine.] TREVOR That won't stop it. [Everyone looks at him.] We have to get as close to the extractor as possible. It's our only chance. STEVE Are you crazy?!! RON Do it. [The five huddle around the extractor as the scene fades to white. Cut to a much nicer lab, with instruments labeled in Tralkan. Similar alarms are sounding, and the white-coated techies are also panicking.] TECH It's no use!! Evacuate the lab! EVACUATE!! [Techs scream as this scene also fades to white. A moment later, five blurry shapes roughly in the shapes of human beings begin to materialize...]
